“Cor ad Cor Loquitur”
Blessed John Henry Newman:
A One-day Conference and Mass Celebrating His Beatification
Saturday, October 23, 2010
Fordham University Lincoln Center Campus
In New York City on Saturday, October 23, 2010, a conference and Mass will celebrate the September beatification of John Henry Cardinal Newman by Pope Benedict XVI. Sponsored by Fordham University and The Spiritual Family The Work, the one-day event begins with 8:30 am Mass at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church. The main celebrant will be Most Reverend James D. Conley, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Denver, along with Father Rector Peter Willi, FSO, International Superior of the Priests’ Community of The Spiritual Family The Work.
Following Mass, the conference will be held at Fordham University’s Lincoln Center Campus. Moderated by Reverend Father Joseph Koterski S.J., Professor of Philosophy at Fordham University, the Newman conference will feature a panel of scholars who will share their insights into the life and works of the newly beatified English convert, a passionate searcher for the truth who chose as his cardinalatial motto, “Cor ad cor loquitur” (heart speaks to heart).
The conference panel includes: Reverend George Rutler, Pastor of the Church of Our Saviour and well-known preacher and author; Dr. John Kezel, University Director of Prestigious Fellowships, and Director of the Campion Center at Fordham University; and Sr. Kathleen Dietz, FSO, member of the International Centre of Newman Friends, and faculty member of the Theology Department at Gannon University in Erie, PA.
Conference topics include: “Newman on Being a Christian in the World” and “Priests, Prophets, and Kings: Ecclesiology in Newman and Tolkien.” A reading from Newman’s Dream of Gerontius and a video on Blessed Newman’s life will also be highlights of the conference.
Conference co-sponsor, The Spiritual Family The Work, runs the International Centre of Newman Friends, including four Newman libraries. The community’s foundress, Mother Julia Verhaeghe, had a special affinity for the person she referred to as a “brother of my soul.” The Conference coincides with the centennial of Mother Julia’s birth, which will be commemorated during the day’s events.
